Canoeing on Moraine Lake: Paddle Your Way to a Perfect Day

Nestled within the stunning Canadian Rockies, Moraine Lake and Lake Louise offer some of the most picturesque landscapes in North America. These iconic lakes, renowned for their crystal-clear waters and breathtaking alpine surroundings, attract visitors from around the globe. Canoeing on these serene waters provides a unique way to immerse oneself in the natural beauty of Banff National Park.

Is the Canoe Rental at Moraine Lake Open?

The water level at Moraine Lake has been lower than usual, but we have great news for you! The canoe dock is now open, and we are giving you some extra time on our 1 PM departure to enjoy this stunning lake from the view of a canoe. So, get ready to dip your paddles in those pristine waters and paddle away into the postcard-perfect scenery. Think of it as nature’s way of saying, “Go ahead, make some waves!”

Can I Canoe on Moraine Lake?

Absolutely! The canoe docks are open daily from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM. Canoes are available on a first-come, first-served basis (sorry, no reservations). The last canoe is rented out around 4 PM. Each canoe can accommodate two to three people. Paddles, life jackets, and basic instructions are provided, so you don’t need to be a seasoned paddler to enjoy the experience. Just bring your enthusiasm and maybe a splash-proof camera for those unforgettable moments. And remember, while tipping your guide is appreciated, tipping the canoe is generally frowned upon.

What is the cost of renting a canoe at Moraine Lake?

Starting from $140.00 CAD plus tax per canoe for a one-hour rental. Unfortunately, your little furry friends are not permitted in the canoes, no matter how cute they look in life jackets. Please note that the dock may close down without notice due to inclement weather (snow, rain, and wind). But let’s be honest, paddling in the rain might be less Instagram-worthy anyway. Besides, we all know that canoes and wind don’t mix well – unless you’re aiming for a real-life reenactment of “Gone with the Wind.”

The canoe rental cost is not included in our tour prices, but the opportunity to paddle on this alpine gem is worth every penny. Whether you’re a seasoned paddler or a first-timer, the stunning scenery and peaceful ambiance make for an incredible outing. The calm waters and majestic backdrop of the Valley of the Ten Peaks provide the perfect setting for a memorable adventure.

Can I Get a Canoe if I Take a Tour to Moraine Lake with Canmore Travel?

Our tour company offers a two-hour visit to Moraine Lake and one hour at Lake Louise on our 1 PM departure, allowing guests to rent a canoe, enjoy the stunning vistas, and take in the serene atmosphere. If canoeing is not your thing, the beauty of Moraine Lake is still very much appreciated from the shore, especially from the famous Rock Pile, the Twenty Dollar View. The towering mountains and reflective waters provide countless photo opportunities and a chance to soak in the serene ambiance of this natural wonder. And let’s be real, who wouldn’t want to brag about hiking up the Rock Pile? It’s like the stairway to heaven, but with fewer harps and more epic selfies.

Planning Your Canoe Adventure at Moraine Lake

When planning your visit to Banff National Park, including both Lake Louise and Moraine Lake in your itinerary is highly recommended. Each lake offers a unique experience and an opportunity to witness the grandeur of the Canadian Rockies from a different perspective.

For your canoe adventure at Moraine Lake, it’s advisable to line up as soon as you arrive at the location, especially during peak season. Canoe rentals are managed by the Moraine Lake Lodge and are available on a first-come, first-served basis. The rental costs vary, but expect a rate of $140 per canoe before tax with a max occupancy of 3 people per canoe. Prices are subject to change. We think it’s a pretty good deal for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. And the tax here in Alberta is only 5%. Lucky us! And lucky you too! That’s less than what you’d pay for a decent poutine in some places, and infinitely better for your waistline.
